The BMW 5 series has defined the large premium saloon through each of its successive generations, particularly if you're the kind of driver that places an emphasis on sporty characteristics and brand image.
This new '5' arrives at a key time, with Mercedes-Benz back on form, Audi now an established contender and Jaguar winning over pundits and buyers alike with the XF.

A wide range of petrol and diesel engines will be available, although not all from launch, so for this review we have the 535i: a petrol variant, this is actually a 3-litre straight six engine featuring direct fuel injection and a turbocharger to produce a substantial 306hp. Think of it as a replacement for the old 540i V8 petrol model in a world where 'downsizing' is the buzzword.
In this particular car it's been coupled to a 8-speed automatic gearbox, including paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for manual control of the gears should you choose to do so. This can also be achieved through the gear lever on the centre console.
